Rodeo history:
● Most people in Osceola County are familiar with Silver Spurs as the authority on rodeo, but not everyone realizes that it's a non-profit organization. We give back to the community through donations to other non-profits and an annual scholarship program using a portion of proceeds raised during the rodeo events held throughout the year.
● This year, a portion of proceeds raised during the Silver Spurs Rodeo performances will be donated to Guardian ad Litem of Osceola County. The program is appointed by the Court to advocate for the best interests of children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
● The first Silver Spurs Rodeo in 1944 was a fundraiser for World War II. The purchase of a war bond was admission to watch the cowboys compete.
● Since the very first Monster Bulls performance seven years ago, a portion of each ticket sold has been and will continue to be donated to the Florida Hospital Foundation for breast cancer research, treatment, and support.
● According to the PRCA, the Silver Spurs Rodeo in February is the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi River (this is measured by prize money, $100,000).
● The Silver Spurs Club hosts a few rodeos each year, with February being its most well-known event, as it coincides with the Osceola County Fair. As a special treat, Osceola County public school students get a day off the Friday of the Rodeo to celebrate. Students get Rodeo Day off while most other counties take off for President’s Day.
● In February 2015, the Silver Spurs Rodeo had its first standing room only performance since moving from an outdoor arena to our new facility at Osceola Heritage Park 12 years prior. That's over 8,000 people for one performance!
● The landscape of Osceola County has changed a lot over the past few decades, but rodeo, ranching, and citrus farming -- all of that remains as part of our history. The Silver Spurs Club is interested in helping preserve that history. Fun Facts:
● The Silver Spurs Rodeo typically lasts two to three hours, during which several events take place: bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding and team roping. Clown acts also perform during the show.
● During the performances, you will notice two groups of men with painted faces. These are rodeo clowns and bullfighters, both with two very different roles. The purpose of the rodeo clown is to entertain the audience between events and during intermission, whereas the bullfighter’s role is to protect bull riders as they exit the arena following their dismount from the bull.
● Rodeo Queens will make an appearance at the Silver Spurs Rodeo. The queens serve as ambassadors for the rodeo by promoting and educating the public at various events they attend throughout the year. There is a Miss, Jr. Miss and Little Miss Silver Spurs. The first pageant took place in 1960 with Janice Samuel Demond as the first queen.
● Many of the bulls, horses, and calves who perform during the Silvers Spurs Rodeo are raised at the Spurs’ ranch in Kenansville. The Silver Spurs Club has been raising rodeo livestock since our formation over 70 years ago.
● For nearly 30 years, the Silver Spurs Club holds a Special Rodeo the morning before the Silver Spurs Rodeo Sunday performance for special needs children living in Osceola County.
● Halfway through each of the Silver Spurs Rodeo performances, kids between six and ten-years-old can participate in our calf scramble. Kids are invited to the middle of the arena where three calves with ribbons on their tails are released into the arena and the three kids who grab the ribbon win $5!
