Be Kind To Mother Earth

Water Saving Tips For Central Florida Familes

By by Helen Lovell-Wayne May 6, 2021

This is this time of year to do something nice for your mother.  Or our mother to be precise.  Mother earth.  I have listed five ways that central Florida families can save water and money.

1) Install toilet water diverters.  These $9.00 contraptions fit in the toilet tank.  The water that keeps getting flushed down even after the flush is finished is wasted.  The diverter diverts the water to the tank instead.

2) Aquire and use a rain barrel.  Rain barrels collect rainwater from the roof.  A spigot is on the bottom.  A hose is attached and viola you have water for the lawn or garden.  The water pressure is lower than a normal hose so this device is good for small areas of land.  Also, the rain barrel owner can take a watering can fill it up, and use it for the garden.

3) Plant native Florida plants.  Native plants need 15% less water than exotics to survive.  Plus they stay in the ground during hurricanes.

4) Install aerators in your bathroom sinks.  These $2-$6 devices puts air in your water.  In that way, you use less water as you wash your hands.  In 15 years of using these devices, I have not once "missed" the water that was replaced by air.

5) Install a low-flow showerhead.  These are quite easy to get used to.  Honestly, I don't really notice the difference when I take a shower.  Ours came with a message option. Which is quite relaxing.
