Watch the Shooting Stars this July and August

By Helen Lovell-Wayne Macaroni Kid Kissimmee Publisher July 22, 2021

Currently, it is the time of year when most people in Florida only want to go outside in the early morning or after sunset.  Luckily at the present time, it is exciting to go outside after dark.  For the next four weeks, we will have the pleasure of being able to witness constant shooting stars every night.  Shooting stars are caused by segments of rock (called meteors) plummeting into the Earth's atmosphere and burning up. So the phenomenon is actually a meteor shower.

The most prolific meteor shower in our area is called perseid.  Although it can be viewed from July 16-August 26 its peak is August 12-13. Most nights at least 50 shooting stars an hour can be viewed.  The best place to view stars is anywhere dark and far away from the lights of cars and buildings.  This could be in the middle of a cattle ranch, a park, or on a boat in Lake Toho.  Wherever you go for the next few weeks look up at the sky.  It is a show you don't want to miss.
