Twelve years ago I ate homemade marshmallows at an event; they were amazing – like eating a cloud. Ever since that day when I see a recipe in a magazine for homemade marshmallows, I think about trying to make them. If you've never had a homemade marshmallow – they taste much different than store bought – they are rich, fluffy, spongey, and sweet.

So, why haven't I made them? Marshmallows are notoriously hard to make, and I was intimidated. I love to bake, but I'm more of a cookie girl. After talking to friends who have made them, I knew that I'd need more than a magazine article to follow to be successful. When I started my subscription with Creativebug, I saw a tutorial for marshmallows and decided that this was the day I was going to do it!

Creativebug is a platform with thousands of online classes by experts who not only show you how to make something, they show you exactly what you need and give you professional tips.

For the "Make Homemade Marshmallows with Karen Solomon" class I was able to watch a 20 minute step-by-step video of exactly how to make marshmallows. Along with the video (which has no ads!) you can read the directions and/or read the transcript. Got questions? You can post them and they'll answer them.

Before starting, my daughter and I got really helpful tips like:

  • what kind of candy thermometer to use
  • water is key to cutting marshmallows
  • if you're not messy, you're not doing it right

We'll be using them in s'mores later this week and I can't wait to try it, but mostly I'm really proud of myself for trying something completely out of my wheelhouse. I felt creative, which I haven't felt in awhile. Creativity is part of Creativebug's mission.

After taking the marshmallow class, my middle child (loves to bake) found an ombre' cookie decorating class and we dove into it after watching the video. An hour later and we had gorgeous autumn-themed cookies.

Creativebug doesn't just have baking recipes though. There are classes for sewing, baking, jewelry, art+design, knitting, holiday+party, kids, and more. We have bookmarked two classes for next week when we decorate our house for Halloween: Spooky Heads in Jars and Halloween Party Decor.

I have never done any type of sewing, but I found an embroidered ornament class and fell in love with the idea, which means that I'm taking up a new hobby.

I'm especially excited about this because winter means more inside time and this will give me an activity that keeps my mind engaged. I would never have even thought that I could try to embroider but with Creativebug the steps for every class are broken down and they have beginner to advanced. When I read their slogan "You're More Creative Than You Think," it rang true for me!
